Kavita's Minced Meat Pie
Kavita's Minced Meat Pie
Recipe serves 4
Ingredients:
- 500 g minced meat (preferably lean)
- 1 medium onion
- 3-4 cloves garlic
- 150-250
g carrots
- 2 medium size leaks
- 2 sticks celery
- 1 level teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme (or 1 full teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1 full teaspoon dried rosemary
- 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
- 2-3 tablespoons tomato ketchup
- 1 small tin (70 g) tomato puree
- 100-125 ml red wine
- 2 teaspoons bouillon powder
- Salt and pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Optional - Few drops of tobasco (pepper sauce)
- 2 sachets dried potato puree
- 75 g low fat grated cheese (10-20+)
Method:
- Fry the finely chopped onion in the oil
- When the onion is soft and transparent (not brown),
add the meat
- Cook the minded meat on high heat until it turns brown. If the meat leaves fat, remove with a spoon
- Lower the heat and add the garlic
- Add the finely chopped carrots, celery and leaks to the meat mixture
- Add
the cinnamon, thyme, rosemary and bouillon powder
- Add the tomato puree, ketchup, worcestershire sauce
- Add the wine
- Stir well and cook the meat and vegetable mixture on medium heat for 20-25 minutes until the carrots are soft
- Add salt and pepper to taste
- Optionally, add a few drops of tobasco (pepper sauce)
- Pour the entire mixture into a 20(b) x 28(l) x 5.5(h) cm pyrex dish (2 ltr)
- Make a potato puree from two sachets (65g each) of dried potato puree,
according to the instructions on the packet. Add 1 teaspoon of mustard to the puree
- Spread the puree evenly over the meat and vegetable mixture
- Finally, sprinkle with the grated cheese
- Place the dish in a pre-heated oven for 30-35
minutes at 200 degrees Celcius
Notes: For a richer version of this recipe, replace the potato puree with a layer of puff pastry. Make a slit in the middle for the steam to escape. Make sure that
pastry turns golden brown in colour.
